自2014年啟動的「自由能源」計劃，透過土壤發電的特殊裝置，不須接電或電池，透過澆水便可產生電力讓燈泡發光，為綠能與環境友善的發展，帶來新的可能性。此計劃持續至2016年，如何結合自然，並進一步達到環境友善，便成為我們耕耘的方向。
擁有豐富生態系的台灣，每年5月到9月為螢火蟲季，由於種種破壞、河川污染、過度開發、人工光害等原因，沐浴在螢光與星空交織的美麗場景，逐漸成為城市生活的奢望。光害牽涉到螢火蟲的習性，較少為人所知，夜間活動的螢火蟲主要是利用光來交換訊息，而人工光擾亂螢火蟲的光信號，加上成蟲有強烈的趨光性，容易被強光吸引進而打擾到螢火蟲的繁殖行為，而幼蟲是逆光性，會造成螢火蟲停止發光或逃竄。
螢火蟲適合生長於擁有乾淨水源且沒有光害的環境中，多半為原始生態的自然區域，正因為多水且無光的環境，加上賞螢時的「三不政策」（不捕捉、不喧嘩、不使用手電筒直接照射），往往造成人們失足滑倒或是其他更加嚴重的傷害。如何解決上述問題，並達到生態友好，便是本次計劃的核心價值。我們所設計與製作的「自由螢火」，可直接插立於土壤中，能自行產生電力提供光源，無須電池或插座等供電設備。同時，因為昆蟲看不見紅色光源，本次計劃裝置使用紅色LED燈，在賞螢步道設置「自由螢火」時，便不會對螢火蟲與其所生長的環境造成影響，讓觀賞者可以在燈源的指引下，享受更加安全、自在的螢光美好，進一步達到人與自然的友善循環。
自由螢火三大特色：

★ 生態友善：紅色光源不會對螢火蟲或其他昆蟲產生影響，達到與人友善，與環境友好的主要目標。
「自由螢火」計劃於2016/05/30發表於「嘖嘖」群眾募資網站，邀請大眾響應本項綠能友好計劃。募資成功後將於石門「阿里磅生態農場」主要賞螢區的兩旁步道，設置超過一百公尺的自由螢火，同時推動民眾參與活動，以工作坊形式引導參與者裝置的組裝。因為你的加入，我們即將踏出讓發光回歸自然的第一步！
In our everyday life, we live on many sources of light. But the way they were produced came with a heavy price for our environment. Until the end of 2015, 78.34% of power generated in Taiwan is thermal power, 16.04% is nuclear power, and 5.62% is renewable energy and others.
Hence we wonder, is there a way to bring light back to its nature? Firefly Lamp is a concept from our science class in elementary or junior high school. It is powered by two kinds of metal with different activities. The less active is positive and the more active is negative. Firefly Lamp is designed to use in soil and anywhere outdoor. It functions independently without any external power.
The core value of Eco Protection Project is to be friendly and kind to our environment. How to reach the goal of a sustainable relationship between human and nature is our everlasting endeavour. After countless failures and efforts for two years, the first step to bring light back to its nature is taken in this firefly season.
Firefly is like a beacon to ecology and they are sensitive to their habitat. It’s hard to access power at most firefly spots since they are in the wild. Furthermore, We normally watch fireflies by water, so if there is a way to walk safely, not falling into those ponds, is quite important for us. The most important of all, each device goes with red light which does not affect fireflies or any other kinds of insects.
If the project is funded, we will go to Aliban ecological farm to set up a 100-meter route of Firefly Lamps to improve ecology and provide a safer environment to watch fireflies. With your support, we can bring energy natural again.
